Significant health benefits for smokers who quit: Study

SINGPORE - A large-sized study looking at smoking habits of the elderly here has seen health benefits for those who have only stopped smoking recently.

The study which was led by Dr Koh Woon Puay of the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health involved about 48,000 smokers and non-smokers. It also categorised its participants into those who have quit smoking for more than 10 years and those who have quit in the last five years.

The study found that significant reduction in risk of total mortality, including lung cancer deaths, can be achieved within five years of smoking cessation.

For instance, new quitters could see their risk of dying of lung cancer due to smoking reduced by about half.

Dr Koh said that the research findings showed that it is never too late to stop smoking. With current outreach efforts targetted at youths to stop smoking, she also pointed out that more awareness could be raised among the elderly.
