Fairytale come True

By Agence France-Presse, Updated: 17/11/2010
Prince William seals engagement with Diana's ring
Prince William and his fiancee Kate Middleton received a flood of congratulatory messages Wednesday after announcing their engagement, with the wedding planned for spring or summer next year.

Prince William seals engagement with Diana's ring
Middleton said she was daunted but happy to be marrying into Britain's royal family after William had proposed, offering her his late mother Diana's engagement ring.

The couple announced their forthcoming marriage on Tuesday after an eight-year courtship, much of it in the full glare of the world's media.

When the couple marry in London next year it will be Britain's biggest royal wedding since William's parents Prince Charles and the then Lady Diana Spencer married at St Paul's Cathedral in July 1981.

William said the sapphire-and-diamond ring his father, the heir to the throne, gave Diana in 1981 was "very special to me".

Giving Kate the ring "was my way of making sure that my mother didn't miss out on today and the excitement and the fact that we're going to spend the rest of our lives together" he said.

Blinking in the glare of flashbulbs, Middleton told a press conference at St James's Palace that the second-in-line to the throne had proposed during a holiday in Kenya three weeks ago. He was a "true romantic", she added.

"It's quite a daunting prospect but hopefully I'll take it in my stride. But William's a great teacher so hopefully he'll be able to help me along the way," said the 28-year-old.

The official announcement ended feverish speculation about when William would get engaged to Middleton, the daughter of a wealthy businessman.

Middleton and William met in 2001 at St Andrews University in Scotland. They broke up briefly in 2007 but soon got back together.

Prince Charles said he was "thrilled" at the engagement, joking: "They have been practising long enough."

Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip were "absolutely delighted", Buckingham Palace said.

William described the moment he proposed in a television interview later Tuesday.

"We had a little private time away together with some friends and I just decided that it was the right time," the prince said.

He said he had carried the ring around in his rucksack "for about three weeks" before proposing.

Asked if they planned to have children, William said: "We want a family so we'll have to start thinking about that."

A statement from Clarence House, Charles' residence and office, said that after marrying, the couple would live not in a palace but in north Wales where William is a Royal Air Force search-and-rescue helicopter pilot.

William's brother Prince Harry said in a statement he was "delighted that my brother has popped the question. It means I get a sister, which I have always wanted."

Kate's parents Michael and Carole said the family thought William was "wonderful" and "we are extremely fond of him."

Prime Minister David Cameron said the wedding would a "great moment for national celebration".

The wedding will happen a year before the queen celebrates her diamond jubilee marking 60 years on the throne -- and London hosts the Olympics.

Middleton's father was an airline steward and later became a flight dispatcher while her mother was an air stewardess before moving into the children's party business.

Messages of congratulation were soon arriving from abroad.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper was quick to invite the future royal couple to his corner of the Commonwealth in a message of congratulations.

"It would be an honour to welcome Prince William and his bride to Canada in the future."

A message from the office of New Zealand Prime Minister John Key said he was "delighted."

Australia's Welsh-born Prime Minister Julia Gillard congratulated Prince William, saying he had left a "strong impression on many Australians" during his January tour Down Under.

"Ms Middleton will no doubt strengthen this remarkable reputation and she has the nation's best wishes and support," said Gillard, Australia's first woman prime minister.

And Japan's top government spokesman, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshito Sengoku, told reporters: "It was truly wonderful...

Focus: Dream come true for girl who had crush on prince

"As I have seen on TV, he is quite a handsome boy and she is beautiful," he said. "It's going to be like a fairytale."

Britain's press was for the most part equally effusive.

"William and Kate will give us a monarchy fit for the 21st century," said a souvenir edition of the tabloid the Sun.

The Times, part of the same newspaper group, agreed.

"It is at moments such as this that the monarchy renews itself and redefines itself for our age," said The Times

The Secret Garden

It's been a wreck, it's been in ruins. It's getting moldy, shrooms are brewing. And me, the self mastered everything HTML blogging queen, (also eBay, programming code, and more... ) today has finally found the right wooden axe to hack away all the hinderance lying all around this space after my superb years of experience messing around with blogger.

the last few hours of toggling with widgets and ever-new-ever-complicated codes had got me on my nerves so much so that at one point I was desperate to give up dealing with blogspot and to consider diving into greener pastures such as wordpress or I-don't-know, u tell me.

Fine, I lied. I would have jumped from the start, if I wanted to. u jump, I jump.

All it took was to start thinking out of the box, the mud, the original source page which after many failed attempts of trying to stick the right words inbetween the hundreds of right brackets. Instead of hitting head on with the brick wall, I changed my strategy, I bullheaded exploring the widgets that were available for me to carry out my plan B.

And oh was I hopping around like an excited child who just chanced upon leprechaun's pot of gold, when I saw my favorite word like HTML and JavaScript, the ancestors of all fanciful codes in the world today. ( pls don't remind me how old I'm getting)

Years of stuck in the mud, all it took was just 5minutes to hit the bulleye.

Yes, for the first time in so many years, I'm proud to say that our little space is alot cleaner and more concise, alot easy to start adding more ribbons and colors.

It's time to spruce up this garden.

Mrs Lee Kuan Yew dies at age 89

SINGAPORE : Madam Kwa Geok Choo — the wife of Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, and mother of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has died on Saturday.

Mrs Lee Kuan Yew, age 89, passed away peacefully at home at 5.40 pm.

A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said the wake is held at Sri Temasek, official residence of the Prime Minister located within the Istana grounds, from October 4—5.

Visitors who wish to pay their last respects may do so on October 4—5 from 10am to 5pm.

Members of the public may call 6835 6614 for any queries.

A private funeral will take place on October 6 at Mandai Crematorium.

The family requests that no obituaries and no wreaths or flowers to be sent.

All donations will go to the National Neuroscience Institute (NNI) Health Research Endowment Fund.

Madam Kwa was one of 8 children.

An outstanding student at Methodist Girls’ School, she also topped the 1936 Senior Cambridge Examination for the whole of Malaya and Singapore.

At Raffles Institution, she caught the attention of a young Lee Kuan Yew when she gave him unexpectedly stiff competition for a Queen’s Scholarship.

But academic rivalry aside, he knew he had found his equal, and his soul mate.

Their relationship grew through the years of Japanese Occupation, and by September 1944, love had blossomed.

When World War II ended, Mr Lee left to study law in England in 1946. But he was miserable until she joined him at Cambridge University a year later.

The two married secretly on 23 December 1947.

She had just turned 27, and he was 24.

Mrs Lee said: "You can’t explain these things ... He had tremendous aplomb, self—confidence, very jaunty, he was a handsome young man."

When they returned to Singapore in 1950, they tied the knot again, this time with their parents’ full knowledge.

When Mr Lee got more involved in politics and became Singapore’s Prime Minister in 1959, it was Mrs Lee and his younger brother, Lee Kim Yew, who built up and expanded Lee & Lee — the law firm all 3 had set up in 1955.

Mr Lee once said his great advantage was that he had a wife who could be a sole breadwinner and bring the children up.

That was his, quote, "insurance policy," which allowed him to play the role he did in Singapore’s history.

In October 2003 — Mrs Lee suffered a stroke while on a visit to London.

Fortunately, she made a swift recovery and was again seen in public at her husband’s side at community events, and on official trips overseas.

And she was there when Lee Hsien Loong was sworn in as Singapore’s third Prime Minister.

Although she had shied away from a high profile, her contributions to Singapore had been most significant, and pivotal to its history.

"If she weren’t an influence, supposing I had married somebody else, I might have become a different person, not that I would be a different person, but the things that I would have been able to do, the kind of backdrop I would have had, family, support, would have been different," said MM Lee. — CNA /ls

Singapore GP Unveils The Official Cocktails For The 2010 FORMULA 1 SINGTEL SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX

21 September 2010 – Singapore GP unveils the two winners of the inaugural Designer Cocktail Contest, with the finals being held at New Asia at Swissotel. The contest was held to select two official signature cocktails for the 2010 FORMULA 1 SINGTEL SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX, one low-alcohol and one non-alcoholic.
The winning low-alcohol cocktail was created by Jobin Joseph, a barman at the Mandarin Oriental. His cocktail - Jumpstart - is a blend of Johnnie Walker whisky, Mumm Champagne, pineapple and lime juice, and garnished with a basil leaf.
The non-alcoholic category was won by Jimmy Lim, Assistant Bar Manager, Long Bar, Raffles Hotel, with his recipe for Singapore Slipstream. The lemon-green beverage is a mix of lemongrass syrup, calamansi, lemon and lime juice, and garnished with a fold of lemongrass.
The competition featured a total of 8 finalist drinks and was judged by of a panel of Food & Beverage experts from Singapore GP, Association of Bartenders and Sommeliers Singapore and key industry partners. The judges spent nearly two hours watching the finalists at work, and sampling every drink. Finalists were judged on the presentation of their cocktail, visual appeal, aroma, taste, as well as creative utilisation of ingredients and garnishes.
Both Jumpstart and Singapore Slipstream will be served to the estimated 10,500 guests each day at the exclusive Paddock Club and corporate hospitality suites. The winning participants have each won a pair of three-day passes to the Green Room at the 2010 FORMULA 1 SINGTEL SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX worth over SGD$7,000.
“Our heartiest congratulations to all the participants and finalists for their creativity and effort. DBS online banking crashes
By Hoe Pei Shan

A technical glitch in DBS' banking system caused a breakdown in its online banking services and much public confusion on Monday morning as thousands of users could not access the systems and draw money from DBS and POSBank ATMs islandwide. --PHOTO: STOMP
A TECHNICAL glitch in DBS' banking system caused a breakdown of its entire online banking services on Monday morning, sparking much anger and frustration among its customers who could not make Internet transactions at its branches or draw money from both DBS and POSBank ATMs islandwide.
DBS has the most extensive network of 81 branches and more than 900 ATMs in Singapore, including those belonging to POSB.
The breakdown was reported as early as 6.30 am on Monday.
DBS has apologised to the public on its website for the inconvenience caused, and a spokesman said that teams from the DBS responded immediately to rectify the problem.
The spokesman said some of the DBS banking systems have resumed normal service at around 10 am.
An update on the DBS website said DBS and POSB ATMs will be 'available progressively', while all DBS, POSB and Treasures branches are now up and operational. It added that it is still working on restoring other services, including credit card services, internet and mobile banking.
Scores of frustrated and irate DBS and POSB customers vented their anger online, some complaining that they visited as many as five different ATMs but were left cashless and unable to top up their cash cards to pay for ERP.
If you have been affected or have more details and photographs of others affected by the breakdown, send them to stonline@sph.com.sg
