Speedboat collision off South Pattaya killed two Chinese men, injured 15 occupants and left one person still missing.

CHON BURI, THAILAND - A speedboat collision 100 metres off South Pattaya yesterday killed two Chinese men and injured 15 others, two of them seriously.

Police and rescue workers rushed to the scene near Bali Hai Pier where a single-engine speedboat named Thawatchainamchok 7 was struck by another single-engine speedboat called Sor Newfrans at about 12.30pm.

The first boat carrying 29 tourists from China, South Korea and Taiwan, as well as a tour guide and the driver, capsized immediately.

The other craft - with 13 tourists from the Middle East, England and Russia along with two drivers - ran aground in shallow water 30 metres offshore.

Chinese tourists - Zheng Honglu, 57, and Chen Ding Chan, 50 - died on the way to a hospital.

Chinese tour guide Thavee Saejong said he and the Asian tourists were returning to Pattaya on Thawatchainamchok 7 from Koh Larn, when Sor Newfran, which was heading out towards Koh Larn for scuba diving, crashed into their boat out of the blue.

Lt-Colonel Chanapat Nawalak, deputy superintendent of Pattaya Police Station, said the two vessels were heading in opposite directions, arriving at and departing from the pier, when the side of Sor Newfran bumped into the other boat's stern, causing both boats to break and sink. Police were aiming to press charges of reckless driving and manslaughter against both boats' drivers.
